Carat Weight

“Carats” are a form of measurement used to weigh diamonds. The size of a diamond is proportionate to it’s carat weight – and we all know – size is important. Each center diamond is hand selected by our diamond experts to get the best proportions of weight and size. At Donj, we will maximize carat weight proportions without sacrificing the quality of the diamond’s color, cut or clarity.

Color

A diamond’s lack of color is an important element of it’s quality. Diamonds are graded based on how colorless they are and color D, E and F are at the top of the range and considered colorless diamonds (best-quality). Colors G and H are also respectable diamond colors and considered near colorless. Color I is also considered near-colorless but doesn’t meet the Donj standards for quality. Thus, we choose only the best colors that we know our clients will be happy with.

D is the best color grade. These diamonds are totally colorless and very rare.

Clarity

Diamond Clarity refers to the absence of inclusions and blemishes. Diamonds are the result of carbon exposed to tremendous heat and pressure. This process can result in a variety of internal characteristics called ‘inclusions’ and external characteristics called ‘blemishes’. These inclusions directly affect the clarity of a diamond. The lower the clarity grade, the lower the quality of diamond. At Donj, we hand select each center diamond to be eye-clean.

VVS1 means very very slightly included (once). The inclusion is difficult to see under 20x magnification. This is the best quality.

Cut

Diamonds are renowned for their ability to transmit light and sparkle so intensely. The cut of a diamond influences how effectively it reflects the light. Well-cut diamonds appear fiery and brilliant and allow light to enter the diamond and be reflected around the facets before exiting the diamond through the top. Poorly-cut diamonds can appear lifeless and dark, despite their clarity or color grade.

Not only do well-cut diamonds appear more brilliant, they also tend to appear larger than other diamonds of the same carat weight.

Brightness: Internal and external white light reflected from a diamond
Fire: The scattering of white light into all the colors of the rainbow
Scintillation: The amount of sparkle a diamond produces, and the pattern of light and dark areas caused by reflections within the diamond

Excellent cut diamonds provide the highest level of brilliance and shine. Almost all of the incoming light is reflected through the diamond which creates a magnificent sparkle.
